Glory Bell – Maverick Harris
Flaming Confidenza – Isabelle Nottingham
“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” – George Bernard Shaw
Isabelle was ecstatic. The two new horses had arrived a little over a week ago and had a few days to rest and settle in before starting their training. Flaming Confidenza had come from Nature Blue Stables, where she had the chance to break her maiden. Now that she was here at Oceanic View, she was expected to up her game and start winning. The palomino filly pranced out of the barn, her head held high, eyeing the race track and her breezing partner, Glory Bell.
Maverick had chosen to ride Glory that day instead of Denza. He was fond of mares, they seemed to have a better connection to him than the geldings. But Isabelle was dying to get on the golden girl first, so in rare form, he decided to be a gentleman and let her. He led the dappled gelding out of the barn behind the first pair. Glory was unusually calm today. He had spent the past week pacing up and down the pasture, anxious by himself. They had heard rumors that the gelding had unlimited amounts of energy and he had to be contained somewhat when turned out. He was highly likely to run himself into the ground if not controlled.
The riders led the horses up to the mounting blocks outside of the track, where the grooms were waiting incase anything happened. Off in the distance, Bella could see Felicity and Blake nonchalantly hand grazing a few of the horses. Their ploy did not fool her at all, they were going to be watching the whole time.
Maverick, ready to go? Isabelle hoped in the saddle and tightened her reins as Denza chomped at the bit and threatened to bolt. It had been a while since either horse had ran against another horse. Today would test their ability to listen. And the jockeys’ strength; there was no doubt it would be a fight to get them stopped at the end.
Mav shook his head at the palomino filly. She was full of herself and very prideful; He couldn’t wait to get on her. Using the silver silky mane on Glory, he swung himself up from the ground into the saddle. Glory snorted at his weight and stood perfectly still, his withers twitching slightly. Mav was slightly confused. Where was all this so called energy?
Alright, let’s get started. The two jockeys walked the horses on to the track to warm up. It went by without too many hitches. Denza threw in a few bucks but nothing that Bella was not ready for. Glory on the other hand, was still calm and listening. He went through the warm up like a seasoned racer, not like a three year old that had not raced in a year.
Bella signaled to Maverick to start the breezing and they let the horses enter a slow gallop. Glory Bell settled behind Denza as they rounded the back stretch. He tossed his head a little bit as he gained on her, but relaxed into his position just off of her rump. On the other hand, Bella was fighting the filly for her head. Denza was determined to take the bit and bolt. Man was she a head strong mare. Bella began to question her choice in horse. Maverick might have had a better time holding her back.
The colt and filly showed no signs of exhaustion as they came around the homestretch. Neither one was willing to give up quite yet. Maverick could feel Glory building underneath him and the colt was getting harder to hold back. He waited until the track straightened out before releasing some rein.
It was like an explosion going off. Glory turned into a completely different horse of took off. He passed Denza within a few strides and opened up the distance between them. At this point Isabelle had let the mare have a little bit of her head, but not all of it. Bella was determined not to let the filly win the fight the two of them were having. It was better to lose than to not be able to control her.
They flew past the finish line with Glory opening up his 3 stride lead. Denza was still fighting to go but Bella held her back. They immediately eased up on the reins but it took until the back stretch to finally get them to halt. That was one hell of a run, eh? Maverick was grinning. He loved winning. Bella rolled her eyes and began walking out her filly. Mav gave Glory a pat on the neck as he followed them around the track.
